Thrice-crowned award winner Jokic sustains a 'heartbreaking' knee injury.

He secured the league's Most Valuable Player award in three of the past four years.

Three-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic sustained a "devastating" knee injury while the Denver Nuggets were defeated by a score of 147-123 to the Heat.

The Serbian center was hurt in the latter stages of the opening half in an accidental collision with fellow Nugget Jones.

His teammate landed on the foot of the big man, and he instantly collapsed to the court holding his leg.

The star, that leads the NBA this season in boards and dimes, recorded 21 points and eight dimes in the game before sustaining the setback.

Jokic will undergo an MRI scan on Tuesday to evaluate the extent of the injury.

"Right away, he realized something was wrong," stated Denver coach David Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Anyone that is injured, it's tough to see, most notably a player as important as he is. More information will come tomorrow."

"We'll move on as a team. Of course, at this moment, I'm more worried primarily about Jokic personally and the letdown of facing an event like that."
