The Showrunner Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Will Conclude... For Now.

Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

With the first season of the popular series wrapping up—and a second season officially in the works—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.

On the Incredible Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.

“It's like being an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”

In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.

“We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by online forums.”

“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Does the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.

“There are some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Of course, why mess with the legendary finales?

“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
