The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Complete Confidence' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a pivotal Champions League tie against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English champions in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight place.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica
The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most exciting young players.
He signed for Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.
Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I have just achieved my dream with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in La Liga against his former club - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have defied his age and experience.
"He's a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He's incredibly dynamic, with great stamina, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.
"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.
"He will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's famous youth academy.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.
According to international regulations, players may represent different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive full international.
He has played for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his rise with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is positive with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team pursue trophies to come.
After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented following the win at Manchester.
