The people of Israel mark second remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
People have assembled around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The attack led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred across the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised on Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was held across the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' representatives convened in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the agreement.
A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative said the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the both parties.
Key Points in Discussions
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance provision
- Future administration of the area
Public Sentiment
In the city's public square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling survived the assault on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released no one will feel safe."
"When we see everybody home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence recover," she continued.
In front of the leader's residence in the capital, people congregated to show their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "We need do every compromise needed for the captives to return. But we really want assurances that we will be safe."
Research now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to end in as payment for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Conditions
At the location of the gathering, grieving people gathered to honor the dead.
From there, the noise of military attacks and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the main city, bombardments were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, area and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side area of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"Once the evening falls, the fear arrives with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who puts his face on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we look at the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."
Health Crisis
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had taken in the bodies of six people by the afternoon, including a trio who died in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of the city indicated another two fatalities had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the southern area, health workers said.
