The Golden State is Completely Free of Drought for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.
After a quarter-century span, no portion of the state is facing drought conditions. This milestone comes on the heels of grueling years marked by insufficient rainfall that intensified blaze threats and challenged its enormous farming industry.
A Map Reveals No Drought
A recent update from the U.S. Drought Monitor confirmed that California in its entirety is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This development resulted from multiple above-normal rainfall that replenished major reservoirs like the state's largest lakes exceeding their historic averages.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” remarked a local meteorologist.
Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons
The path to this point involved severe and lethal winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, resulting in extensive inundation, electrical failures, and tragic losses. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.
Even into late December, regions like Modoc County were deemed abnormally dry. Subsequent downpours at the start of the new year finally erased those final dry conditions.
The Vital Sierra Snow Presents a Challenge
Yet, authorities caution that being out of drought should not be confused with having no water worries. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at roughly seven-tenths of the typical level.
This snowpack, which provides a significant portion of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for the year ahead. Hydrology managers stress that it is premature to make predictions for the months ahead.
“The current pattern right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” commented a California water official. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to pick up by 1 April so that we’re nearer to normal.”
Although the monitor indicates no dryness, attention turns to maintaining this positive water situation during the months to come.
