NY Introduces Reporting Tool for Residents to Report Immigration Videos After Detentions of 4 American Citizens
The state AG has rolled out a new digital platform urging locals to provide photos and videos of immigration raids across New York. This action follows a day after a major ICE raid disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking widespread demonstrations.
US Citizens Arrested In ICE Operation
A lawmaker revealed during a midweek briefing that four citizens were detained and detained for "almost a full day" following the enforcement action. Rallies erupted in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
"All New York residents deserves to live without fear," the AG wrote in a statement.
"If you witnessed and captured immigration enforcement recently, I ask you to provide that material with the authorities. We are committed to examining these accounts and investigating any legal breaches."
Portal Features
The form provides options to send visual evidence of the operation, along with a section to indicate where it occurred. When submitting, users must mark a option that confirms that "the office may use any materials, images, or footage in a official report, such as in a lawsuit or public report."
Details of the Manhattan Operation
The Manhattan operation, which observers say involved over fifty ICE personnel, happened in a famous district of Manhattan where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and additional items are regularly available widely – often to tourists.
Footage of the incident reveal several masked and armed officers securing and holding a individual, and forcing aside witnesses. Masses of locals trailed the agents along the roads. An military-style transport was also seen moving along the Manhattan avenues.
Official Reactions
During a midweek briefing organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, Representative Goldman, a lawmaker, announced that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be detained for without cause." He said the persons were let go on the following day with no accusations made.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not to take criminals off the street," Goldman said. "This is a military-style operation to create conflict. It is merely a justification to generate turmoil for this administration to bring in the troops to halt conflict that they themselves caused."
Broad Criticism
Anger over the ICE raid escalated – all three political contenders condemned the incident, along with the state leader.
"Yet again, the current administration selects heavy-handed tactics that create fear, rather than security. It needs to cease," a political candidate wrote.
New York City community groups spoke out also.
"Immigration agents targeted the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, masked agents and tactical gear to focus on street vendors attempting to earn income. This raid had nothing to do with community security and focused completely on intimidating residents and neighborhoods," remarked the president of a rights organization.
ICE Policies
Agency rules bans the holding of citizens and the organization has stated it will not take into custody citizens. However, external research has discovered that more than 170 citizens have been detained unlawfully by ICE during the period of the current administration.
Recent Pattern
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in the state and nationwide recently.
A recent action in the city center was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the current administration. Demonstrations against immigration enforcement are widespread including allegations of aggression and inhumane treatment.
Latest, a letter submitted by advocacy organizations claimed inadequate care of women with child in ICE facilities.
