New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities released video stills Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
