Forecasters have indicated a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Festive Plans Proceed Despite Alerts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the national forecaster.

Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and open skies. Temperatures are forecast to be chilly, meaning extra layers essential, as per forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Heading into Friday, snow alerts are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Forecast to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are expected to drop further as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Medical Advisories Issued

In addition, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
