McLaren Points Finger at Competitors for Norris-Piastri Incident

Tire detaches from McLaren after contact between Norris and Piastri

A wheel flies off the car of Norris after he collided with team-mate Oscar Piastri at the opening of the US GP sprint event.

McLaren F1 team leaders Zak Brown and Stella attributed competitors for the collision between Piastri and Lando Norris at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint race.

The Australian driver, leading his teammate in the standings by twenty-two points, made contact with his fellow McLaren driver after hitting the Hulkenberg.

The incident took both team drivers out of the event, along with the Fernando Alonso, who was on the inside of the Sauber driver.

McLaren Leaders Voice Frustration Over Crash

Brown, McLaren Racing's CEO, told broadcasters that some of the racing at the start was "amateur hour", stating: "Clearly Hulkenberg hit Oscar and he had no business being where he was."

McLaren F1 boss Stella stated: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the opportunity to race."

"It is unexpected that some racers with a lot of experience don't act with appropriate caution. Enter the first corner, make sure you avoid harming competitors and continue."

The team indicated that Stella was referring to both Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin driver.

Differing Perspectives on the Crash

Nevertheless, former champion Damon Hill, commentating for a sports broadcast, said he believed the Australian had not demonstrated enough understanding of the risks of the first corner of an F1 race when he chose to move inside to try to overtake Norris.

The Australian had a better start than the Briton and at first challenged on the outer side on the uphill entry to the turn.

But he then cut back in an effort to get a run on his teammate on the way out, only to hit Hulkenberg.

Driver Reactions After the Incident

The McLaren driver said: "Less than perfect but I did not see what happened, I tried to cut back on Lando and we were both very far from the apex and then were struck and it sent me into Lando. A shame."

Norris said: "I just got hit, right? I was not at fault. Further back things happened and I just was unfortunate and was struck because of it. I am unsure. I need to look a bit more thoroughly. It's more drivers further back just being a bit reckless and we are the result of that."

Alonso said: "At one point I believed I was in the correct position on the inside, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outside switching back and then I was there in the middle."

Hulkenberg, who had earned a best qualifying fourth, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from the previous day in the bin. Just chaotic."

"Oscar steered inward pretty aggressively trying to get the inside line and way out of the first corner but I cannot vanish."

"I had Alonso attack on the inner side and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to leave space for him and then Piastri turned in and the collision was unavoidable."

Post-Crash and McLaren's Reaction

McLaren will analyze the crash with their drivers but only after the race weekend. Both vehicles needed significant repairs before qualifying session at 22:00 BST on Saturday.

The team principal said: "In general displeased but we accept it, we are now concentrating on repairing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there."

"We are in a strong position from our performance point of view so I trust we have the opportunity to race, race normally and capitalise on our performance."

"Championship points are the key thing, I don't want to talk about bad intentions, just caution. A little more prudence would be good for all involved."

Standings Impact

The race was taken by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who gained ground on both McLaren drivers in the standings - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and thirty-three adrift of Norris.

The team boss said: "The consequence is what the maths show - we lost eight points with both racers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable car and two strong drivers. We anticipate just some standard competition."

Verstappen said he was taking the title race one event at a time.
