Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Confronts Life Behind Bars
He fought the legal system and the legal system prevailed.
A couple of months subsequent to being handed a 27-year sentence for attempting to “annihilate” Brazil’s democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now looks destined for incarceration.
Expected Imprisonment
The adjudicated instigator – who's been under home confinement in his residence while a number of legal procedures and appeals unfold – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the next few days, amidst mounting talk that he will be sent to a well-known high-security facility.
Past Remarks on Inmates
During Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the far-right ex- paratrooper displayed minimal mercy for Brazil’s inmates.
“What’s the need to give those dirtbags a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They should just get screwed, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to wind up there, all you have to do is not rape, kidnap or theft.”
Prison Facility Discussion
But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda prison high-security prison in Brasília has horrified supporters, four of whom this week toured the facility in an obvious bid to discourage the supreme court from transferring him there.
The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was part of that quartet, said he expected the 70-year-old leader to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal issues – the result of a near-fatal stabbing during the 2018 election race – signified it would be hazardous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He cannot to cope if they move him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” he commented, who also worried about cramped cells and the quality of jail cuisine.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells containing four dozen inmates: “It's almost one square meter per detainee.
“We spoke to the convicts and they protest, naturally, of the horrible meals,” continued the senator.
Supporters Speak Out
Lucas is not the only voice voicing opinions ahead of the one-time head of state's predicted incarceration.
Penning in a prominent daily, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the greatest wrong in its history”.
“This is an unfairness that erodes the spirits of many people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.
Divided General Opinion

Yet his anticipated jailing has also warmed the feelings of many others who feel he ought to be incarcerated for planning to prevent the incoming president from assuming office – and even plotting to have him assassinated.
Congressman Otoni, a representative for the sitting leader's Workers’ party, said: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be placed in a hole. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to obtain respectful care – but respectful care behind bars. He cannot carry on being his own prison warden for his whole life.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years praising the severe treatment of inmates, had suddenly realized to their rights. “Recently has the far-right – which has repeatedly asserted that basic rights should not be for lawbreakers – decided to visit a prison to learn what situations are truly like,” he said.
“The former president is a offender,” he affirmed, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, demeaning conduct”.
Likely Jail Conditions
In spite of rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which presently holds about thousands of detainees, his probable location looks to be a adjacent penitentiary for police officers and other “unique” prisoners referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).
His potential cell are far more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although nevertheless a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro had while residing in the impressive leader's home, about 20 kilometers away.
As per sources, the room Bolsonaro could anticipate reside in in Papudinha has about 260 square feet – approximately the area of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 sq metre restroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot balcony. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a television and even a small fridge in his room as long as they were provided by his relatives,” the report stated.
