Italy's Watchdog Slams Lift Ticket Cost Increases as Totally Unreasonable
A leading Italian consumer association are sounding the alarm over what they call completely unjustified price increases for ski passes this winter season, cautioning that alpine sports could become an exclusive privilege for affluent individuals.
Significant Cost Rises Across Italy
From the majestic Alps and stunning Dolomite mountains in the northern areas to the ski runs of Abruzzo, prices are poised to increase by as much as 40% compared to prices from three years ago, according to recent analysis.
The popular Dolomiti Superski ticket, which grants access to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now cost skiers €86 per day this season. In Roccaraso, a single-day lift ticket is expected to reach €60, after experiencing substantial visitor surges last season.
Seasonal Pass Costs and Additional Expenses
Meanwhile, seasonal ski passes will range from €755 per adult in Roccaraso to upwards of €1,800 in the northern Aosta area.
The expense of hiring winter sports gear has similarly risen, along with hotel accommodations and dining expenses throughout alpine destinations.
Watchdog Leader Cites Unjustified Increases
Gabriele Melluso, heading the watchdog organization, emphasized that the price increases—attributed by resorts to higher energy costs, resort maintenance, and demand for better equipment—were completely unjustified and not acceptable.
"Both because Italian inflation rates are under control and utility costs, which had raised operational costs for mountain facility managers in 2022, have stabilized at previous levels," he explained.
He added that prices have now reached levels where less wealthy individuals are being compelled to skip their traditional settimana bianca, or winter vacation, altogether.
Visitor Decrease and Broader Context
He noted a significant drop in mountain tourism during the current winter period, with 1 million fewer Italians visiting ski resorts compared to the prior season due to rising costs.
Despite these increases, Italy remains a more affordable destination for skiing enthusiasts in western Europe compared to neighboring Switzerland, France, and Austrian locations.
International Event Background
The growing concern over winter sports expenses comes as the country prepares to host the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics between the first three weeks of February. Italy's foreign minister, the foreign affairs official, recently stated that Italy had submitted a proposal to the United Nations urging a "worldwide ceasefire" during the international event.
"With Milan Cortina we must also send a peaceful communication and dialogue... to stop warfare during the Games," Tajani emphasized.
