Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
