No major competition promotes competitive balance as effectively as the NFL: it’s the entire brand. Yet following the first ten matchups during the current schedule, this is not a competition featuring uniform distribution between the good, the bad and the mediocre. Rather, we see a situation where the bulk of franchises is simply fine.

NFC Clarity

In the NFC, for the most part, we see clearer definition. Los Angeles and Seattle (both standing at seven wins, two losses) seem like the most well-rounded squads across the league, and delivered overwhelming triumphs in their weekend matchups. The 6-2 Eagles despite their struggles continue to possess a deeply skilled squad in the league, similar to the Packers franchise (five wins, two losses, one tie). Detroit as well (six and three), with their fluctuating form on offense and defense while managing coaching drama, have shown they're capable of dominating strong franchises. AFC Confusion

In the AFC however, championship race is thoroughly confusing. The four teams leading their divisions through ten weeks: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (each with 8-2 records) along with Pittsburgh (5-4). Consider that carefully. Kansas City isn't there. The fact Baltimore began with a 1-5 record yet still appear they should win the division is telling about the complete conference.

Historical Favorites

The Ravens represent a segment among three elite teams – together with Bills and Chiefs – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, who could still create the highest anxiety in opposing teams if they qualified. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, however, both franchises cannot get out of their own way.
