Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after former President Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and stated they should be taken into custody and sentenced "with execution" following their release of a controversial video.
The Message That Triggered the Debate
The clip, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who previously acted in armed forces or intelligence positions.
"As we did, you all made an oath to defend and support this constitution," the representatives affirmed in the short video. "At present, the threats to our democratic foundation are not only from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you must refuse illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that violate the statutes or our founding principles."
Trump's Angry Response
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a heated reply from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he wrote: "This is really serious, and Risky to our Country. Their statements cannot be allowed to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders React
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Democratic leadership published a joint announcement denouncing the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no position in America," they declared. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all worked our United States with tremendous national pride and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous threats of violence against elected officials, and urge House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these radical online messages and retract his dangerous discourse before he causes harm," the statement continued.
Officials' Defiant Response
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also released a statement.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who love this nation and took an pledge to protect and support the constitution of the United States," they declared. "This commitment is permanent, and we plan to maintain it. No threat, pressure, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that important responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the former president deems it liable to punishment by death for us to restate the law," they stated. "Our service members should recognize that we have their protection as they execute their pledge to the national charter and duty to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "The entire nation must unite and condemn the president's demands for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a period for principled stance."
Further Partisan Comments
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's statements and shared on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the execution of public representatives."
He continued: "This is an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should denounce this right away and absolutely."
The Conservative official justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This represents very dangerous, you have important representatives of the government instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that's without precedent in the nation's past."
The GOP official also according to sources stated to journalists that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the crime of treason" but that "attorneys have to examine the wording and establish all that."
Administration Response
During a White House press conference on later that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Would the president want to put to death elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "Certainly not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is responding to," the spokesperson declared. "There are current representatives of the US Congress who coordinated to arrange a digital communication to members of the US military, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the commander in chief's legal commands."
She said: "The integrity of our armed forces relies on the chain of command, and if that structure is violated, it can lead to casualties, it can lead to chaos, and precisely what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
