Scorching conditions and intense bushfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures expected to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across a large portion of the southwestern region.

Widespread Extreme Heat Alerts Throughout Multiple States

These conditions follow recent fires in New South Wales, which caused the destruction of properties and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have also been issued for the coming days in parts of SA and NSW, as a system of high pressure moves eastward, bringing blazing heat to a broad swath of the region.

The combination of extremely dry vegetation and relentless high temperatures presents a dangerous scenario for emergency crews.

Global Climatic Events Trigger Chaos

Elsewhere, a major city was left in blackout last week after strong winds compromised the city’s power grid, with falling trees knocking out power lines. The weather conditions also caused major transport delays at a major airport, where hundreds of air services were grounded. Severe impact on power systems is anticipated to cause further issues as service providers scramble to restore power to more than 1 million residents.

Atypical Fog Covers Sunny Region

At the same time, a region famed for its sunny weather and plentiful sunlight has endured one of its dullest and foggiest periods on recorded history. A particular form of low cloud, which usually lingers for only a few days, has been unusually widespread and long-lasting this year, keeping the mercury at a major airport below 8C for over a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The prolonged haze has been driven by exceptional fall rainfall that left the ground saturated.

Storm Delivers Wintry Weather to Holiday Destination

And in another country, a powerful storm has ushered in heavy rain, strong winds and even snowfall to a set of islands – conditions many would not connect with this favored holiday destination. While wintry precipitation is not unheard of at elevated areas, the system delivered some of the heaviest accumulations in 2016 to a protected area, forcing its closure.

Alongside the snowfall, fierce northerly winds buffeted the island chain, with gusts reaching 50mph recorded on multiple islands. The effect of the storm is forecast to ease this week with more seasonal conditions returning.
