Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the flight.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her pioneering work championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of space.
